One of the easiest musical instruments, guitar can be used to play anything from country and modern music to classical covering everything that comes in between. Beauty of the instrument is that learning a few basics can enable one to play guitar easily. The article gives the finer points on ” how to play guitar ” If someone aspires to become a master at playing the instrument, besides learning the basics, he or she has to take formal training and is also required to exploit the full potential of the instrument. People that have difficulty in forming the shapes of chords with fingers should start learning with single note songs or with power chords. Using such power chord can help build up strength of the finger and dexterity as well as one’s familiarity with the instrument. Advantages of using the system are reduction of stress and frustration. Also adding a tuner can make the sounds better and will familiarize the guitar player with the string and fret combinations. An important aspect of becoming a good guitarist is to learn reading the guitar tabs. Usually guitarists have their own way of music notations that is known in the music circles as guitar tabs. Each line of the tab corresponds to some string and each number indicates the fret to be held down while plucking the string. Finger placement is vital for becoming a good guitarist. While the right handed players use the left hand for fretting and right hand for picking, left handed players do the reverse. Frets are the metal strips running parallel to the strings without crossing them. Also it is the finger tips and not the soft part of the finger that is used to play guitar. Since there are multiple ways of positioning the finger on the same chord, it would be necessary keeping in mind every time while moving between frets that the pitch that comes out would be a step higher or lower. That is denoted as “sharp” or “flat” tunes in musical circles and is the bases for playing sheet music. Most vital thing that no aspirants for becoming good guitarist should forget is that practice makes man perfect and it is disciplined and dedicated practice that can turn one from novice to seasoned guitarist.

The history of bass guitars dates back to 1930s when it was first developed by Paul Tutmarc of Seattle, Washington. A bass guitar looks similar to an electric guitar except it is larger in terms of body and neck length. The guitar is tuned to pitches that are one octave lower than those of the four lower strings of a guitar (E, A, D and G). Like electric guitars, bass guitars are attached to an amplifier or speaker for live performance. What are bass guitars made of?The bass guitars usually have bodies made of wood. The body may also be made of other materials like graphite as in some of the Steinberger guitars. Different types of woods are used for the making of the neck, body and the fretboard of the bass guitars. Usually the body is made of alder; the fretboard is made of rosewood and the neck of maple. Other types of woods used are ash, mahogany and maple for bodies, maple and ebony for the fretboard and mahogany for necks. The bass guitars have various flat and curved designs and oil, wax, or lacquer finishes. What creates the bass effect? Most of the bass guitars have bodies with hollow chambers to enhance the resonance and tone of the instruments. This design also reduces the weight of the guitars. Acoustic bass guitars usually have piezoelectric or magnetic pick ups and amplifiers. Bass Guitars may also be classified on the basis of the frets. The Fender basses have about 20 frets whereas modern basses have about 24 or more frets. The Fretless basses produce distinct sound due to lack of frets. Usually the bass guitars have four, five or six strings. You can take formal bass guitars training in a wide range of styles like jazz, rock, Latin, funk and R&B. You may even learn informally from records or CDs. There is a wide variety of brands and styles of bass guitars. You can buy them along with many different accessories according to your individual needs. Some of the accessories that are often required are amplifiers, cables, straps, tuners, headphones, Instructional DVDs and gig bags. You can even shop online. The different websites will offer you the opportunity to make a well informed buy. They can also create personalized packages that contain the accessories that you want to suit your individual tastes and preferences

Many people who want to learn how to play the guitar try to rush themselves, jumping into guitar tablature before they have a firm grip on the basics of the guitar. The key to becoming a good guitarist in the long run, is to become a master of the basic, fundamental elements of the instrument before trying to move on to more complex and harder guitar techniques. Before you can learn to play the guitar you should first learn how the instrument works and how to properly take care of it. The guitar is composed of a long wooden neck attached to a large hollow body over which a set of six strings, of various thickness, are stretched. These strings vary in thickness and, when plucked, each resounds with a different music note. By pressing down upon a string at various points along the neck (these points are called guitar frets) you can change the pitch of the resulting sound. It is common for people to underestimate the value of learning about the guitar and how to care for it before they begin to actually learn to play the guitar. However, learning to tune your guitar and understanding how to properly replace strings and store your instrument can affect how well it plays and how long it lasts. After you have gained a proper understanding of these principles you can feel even more confident in moving on toward learning to play the guitar. You should begin by familiarizing yourself with the open strings and then progress toward using frets to create different chord and notes. Many inexperienced guitarists find it uncomfortable at first to press down on the guitar strings and it requires a great deal of practice to build familiarity with the proper position your fingers must be in to strike each note. Do not be too eager to move on from learning the notes – notes are the building blocks of chords, the next step in your learning, but you cannot successfully master chords unless you have a firm foundation in the notes which compose them. It may sound boring to spend a great deal of time running through notes, but when it comes time to learn chords and scales you will be grateful that you did. If you dedicate yourself to mastering these basics, you will find that, down the line, you will be a much better guitarist for it.

From a common man’s point of view, a guitars is a long, fretted, stringed instrument with a number of strings ranging from two to fourteen. From a musician’s point of view, a guitar is an instrument that is used to lend some soul to a particular piece of music. Music and its genres have evolved and have become more complex over the years and so have guitars and their types. Here is a brief introduction to guitars, their types as well as the various effects used to enhance the sound and make it more alive.Acoustic GuitarsAcoustic guitars originated in Europe and have been played all around the world ever since. A number of variants have emerged which have lent guitar sounds that have become synonymous to that particular area. Some of these variants are the Spanish guitar, classical guitar (employs the use of strings made of nylon), Portuguese guitar, 12- string guitars as well as harp guitars etc. Maple and rosewood are two of the commonest materials used in the construction of these guitars.Semi-acoustic GuitarAcoustic bands came into being; stages got a whole lot bigger and the need for a louder guitar sound was felt. This gave rise to what we know today, as the semi-acoustic guitars. They have pickups, installed right before the bridge. A volume control with a socket for amplifier output is installed on the body. Electric GuitarsSound boards are absent in electric guitars. The sound from an electric guitar is completely dependent upon the kind of pickups as well as the amplifiers. These guitars were first designed for the sole purpose of stage performances.Bass GuitarBass guitars have longer fret boards, when compared to the conventional acoustic or electric guitars. This is due to the fact that a bass guitar has to accommodate thicker strings that enable it to produce low frequency sounds. The most commonly sold bas guitars are four stringed. Guitar Effects For all those who haven’t heard the likes of Jimi Hendrix play some memorable guitar solos, it will be hard to explain what a guitar effect is. The simplest guitar effect, when connected to an electric or a semi acoustic guitar can create multiple images of the same sound that is being played on the instrument to give it a shrilly feel.Guitar effect technology has evolved since the late 60′s. These days, a whole new range of sounds can be taken out with the help of a guitar to suit different moods as well as audiences. It is best that you go online to learn about other subdivisions of the guitar and for hands on knowledge about guitar effects like single pedal, wah pedals as well as a cry baby.

This premise is sort based on the old adage “take care of your heart and it will take care of you.” Now I know this may not be that extreme but there is something we can take from this statement. Do the simple thing things to take care of your guitar and it will prolong the life of your investment. It may surprise you the amount of people that neglect their basic guitar needs. The unbelievable thing is it is very easy to do basic guitar maintenance to keep your guitar healthy and sounding great. Here is a great case in point. Do you have any idea how many people I have played with over the years when done playing their guitar just toss it in the case? This may seem normal or not a big deal to you. However this could be causing damage to your guitar. Allow me to put to you this way. You have been to a museum? What is one of the biggest rules? Touch anything. That is what they will not let you do. The reason for this is because of the oils on your hands they can over time damage these items. Over time this can have the same effect on your guitar. To help protect your guitar and strings for that matter when you are done playing just wipe down the instrument. It doesn’t take long and it will shield your guitar and string. Set update a schedule for replacing your strings. This is very important to keeping a good sound and believe it or not this will protect your fretboard on the neck. I bet you are wonder how replacing strings will help save your fretboard. Well just like the oils on your hands you have dirt that can get trapped on the stings. That dirt over time this will build up on the fretboard and can damage the wood. I have seen fretboards with mounds of dirt build up and it is not pretty.Another schedule that should be administered is a cleaning or polishing schedule. There are tons of good guitar polishes and neck preservers on the mark. These are great to protect your instrument from dirt and harmful oils. I would recommend every two to three months doing an all over polish and cleaning. These are some of the basics to guitar maintenance. The items I have laid out are not time consuming or hard and need to be done. Do not blow these schedules off or over time you may be sorry. There are other maintenance items we can perform such as adjusting the neck, intonation and string height. We will be getting into these in other articles but for now start on first base.

One of the challenges for the novice guitarist is learning the basic chords. You will not only need to know where to put your fingers, but also how to change from one chord to another. The technique of smooth transition between chords is a learning process we are never really finished with. Every time we learn something new on the guitar, that’s another sequence of small movements our body learns, and these sets of movements must be executed smoothly through relaxed, calm practice.Holding chords with your left hand is a new skill. It uses groups of muscles we do not normally use, so it takes time to learn the chord shapes without experiencing discomfort. There is light at the end of the tunnel, although sometimes the tunnel seems very, very long.Another physical adaptation that has to be made when you learn your basic guitar chords is the left-hand fingers need to be toughened up. Callouses form on the tips of the fingers after a few weeks playing, but until they do you need to put up with the pain.Fortunately learning the notes on the guitar is a job that does come to an end. As you learn more songs, chords and scales you will feel your ease with musical theory and notation growing even if you didn’t directly learn much theoretical stuff. If you learnt in your own way the knowledge gets into you by way of constant practice and the enjoyment you bring to your guitar playing. So the task at hand is to learn a basic group of chords. This is your toolbox you begin your guitar playing with. Each chord is identified by a letter. If the letter is followed by the word, minor, it’s a minor chord. If it is just the letter alone, it’s a major chord.Major chords contain the Root note, a major third above the Root plus a fifth above the Root.Minor chords, which have a more “sad” sound, are the same except that they contain a minor third instead of a major third.A basic rule of thumb for understanding major and minor chords is for a major chord play the (1) (3) and (5) of the major scale, and for a minor chord play the (1) (3) and (5) of the minor scale.A handy thing to know once you start playing barre chords is that if you learn the major chord shape, you only need to lift one left-hand finger to play the minor chord. The basic chords come from the keys of A G C and D. The chords themselves can be played at all positions on the fret board, but beginners start with open chords at the first position. This means that at least one note is played on an open string. We group the basic keys into families:The A family contains the chords A, D and E.The D family contains the chords D, E minor, G and A.The G family contains the chords G, A minor, C, D and E minor. The C family contains the chords C, D minor, E minor, F and G.

So you want to be able to play your guitar like Jim Hendrix? It could take a while it’s no easy thing but everybody has to start somewhere. So here is a basic guitar lesson – If you are a complete beginner I will just run through some of the basics.Firstly we will start off with the two methods when you are sitting – casual and classic. With the casual position, sit on the edge of your seat resting your guitar on your right leg (if you are right handed) and hold the neck of the guitar with your left hand. The guitar will be more or less in a horizontal plane. With the classical seated position the guitar body is resting in between the legs and the neck raised higher in the left hand – around 40 degrees to the horizontal. For the standing position, put the strap over your shoulder and adjust it for a comfortable position mid body. Hold the neck of your guitar with your left hand again in a normal position of about 30-40 degrees to the horizontal. When you place your hand on the neck of the guitar make sure your wrists and hands are relaxed. If your hand feels awkward you are probably in danger of a strain or injury. When you are playing the guitar you press your fingers of your left hand onto the strings just behind the frets. This is called fretting. You use your right hand to strum the guitar near the bridge. Being a beginner your fingers will hurt at first by pressing them on the frets but after a week or two you will get guitar fingers and not notice. Make sure your fingernails are kept short, this will make it easier to play, use only the tips of your fingers and as I said before when you are playing make sure you are pressing just behind each fret. Hold the plectrum or pick between your thumb and index finger.I hope you have enjoyed you first basic guitar lesson. For further Info on how to improve quickly with basic guitar lessonsOriginal article source: http://ezinearticles.com/?A-Basic-Guitar-Lesson-For-Everyone&id=1929463

Guitar strumming, regardless of the style of music you play, is the crucial backbone to knocking out all types of tunes.Having a good grasp of the simple guitar stroke method will enable you to learn guitar in record speed and will save you from the never-ending hours of trying to guess your alternative to playing your favorite songs on your own, without a clue. One of the best alternatives to get started is by utilizing a guitar manual or songbook with chord symbols and uses these methods with different chords and songs. It’s more fun to practice if you’re playing “real” music at the same time and there are now jam along type tracks and software that you can purchase online. There are two different kinds of stroke, the down stroke and the down-upstroke. Let’s take a look at each and how they are attained:1. The Down strokeSit in a comfortable position and rest the guitar on your right knee. Now, settle down your hands.Next, place your right hand through the body of the guitar, with your thumb a little touching the lowest (low E) string.Place your finger on the easy G chord with your left hand: Press your index finger down on the third fret of the best (high E) string. This will give you a “real” chord to play. Now for the stroke, stroke with your right thumb from the fourth (D) string down across the strings, almost as if you’re sweeping dust from the strings. To keep the timing right, initiate counting 1-2-3-4 with each stroke with attention on the every time you tell “1″. This will enable you to keep a simple 4/4 rhythm whilst strumming, which is an identical rhythm used by lots of song structures.2. The Down-UpstrokeNow on an identical chord, stroke down across the strings, stroke backs contrary the strings from the smallest to the biggest. The down-up strum goes like this: Down-1, down up-2, down up-3, down up-4 (in 4/4 time). So each time you strum down, you bring your fingers back upwards to sweep the strings the other way. This will take a couple of practice at first, but you’ll find that once you master the rhythm and hit all the strings of the chord, you’ll be able to play much quicker and cleanly every time. Don’t rush, as you will make more mistakes and you’ll end up disappointed.Learning guitar can get pretty monotonous with traditional drills and habits. This is why so many beginner guitarists either quit or guess their alternative to developing their abilities. If you’d like to surely master the fundamentals in the quickest probable time, without realizing bored or disappointed (and in truth see what you’re supposed to be doing every time playing along), then you should sample it out.
