Basic Guitar Maintenance Keep your Guitar Safe

I've created this web site to be a help to everyone that desires to learn to play guitar. You'll notice we have included some content pieces to help you get going.

If you happen to require some more detailed info, I highly recommend having a look at the product mentioned just above this article. And please, if I can be of any assistance, don't hesitate to drop me a line!

This premise is sort based on the old adage “take care of your heart and it will take care of you.” Now I know this may not be that extreme but there is something we can take from this statement. Do the simple thing things to take care of your guitar and it will prolong the life of your investment. It may surprise you the amount of people that neglect their basic guitar needs. The unbelievable thing is it is very easy to do basic guitar maintenance to keep your guitar healthy and sounding great. Here is a great case in point. Do you have any idea how many people I have played with over the years when done playing their guitar just toss it in the case? This may seem normal or not a big deal to you. However this could be causing damage to your guitar. Allow me to put to you this way. You have been to a museum? What is one of the biggest rules? Touch anything. That is what they will not let you do. The reason for this is because of the oils on your hands they can over time damage these items. Over time this can have the same effect on your guitar. To help protect your guitar and strings for that matter when you are done playing just wipe down the instrument. It doesn’t take long and it will shield your guitar and string. Set update a schedule for replacing your strings. This is very important to keeping a good sound and believe it or not this will protect your fretboard on the neck. I bet you are wonder how replacing strings will help save your fretboard. Well just like the oils on your hands you have dirt that can get trapped on the stings. That dirt over time this will build up on the fretboard and can damage the wood. I have seen fretboards with mounds of dirt build up and it is not pretty.Another schedule that should be administered is a cleaning or polishing schedule. There are tons of good guitar polishes and neck preservers on the mark. These are great to protect your instrument from dirt and harmful oils. I would recommend every two to three months doing an all over polish and cleaning. These are some of the basics to guitar maintenance. The items I have laid out are not time consuming or hard and need to be done. Do not blow these schedules off or over time you may be sorry. There are other maintenance items we can perform such as adjusting the neck, intonation and string height. We will be getting into these in other articles but for now start on first base.
